Every guide here comes out of the same work that powers our free VIN decoder: reading manufacturer encoding standards, factory documentation, and the ISO 3779 / 49 CFR 565 rules that define what each of the 17 characters means. Instead of keeping that knowledge inside the decoder, we write it up so you can understand why a VIN decodes the way it does — and what to do with that information when you're buying a car, ordering parts, or checking a listing.

The collection is written and maintained by the DecodeAnyVin team and updated as manufacturer encoding schemes change.
