How to Read a VIN: Position-by-Position Guide

Learn how to read a 17-character VIN position by position: WMI, VDS, check digit, model year, plant, and serial. Decode factory specs with DecodeAnyVin.

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character factory serial that identifies a specific vehicle under the ISO 3779 standard. Once you know which positions mean what, you can read manufacturer, model attributes, check digit, model year, plant, and production sequence without guessing. This guide walks through each section so you can interpret a VIN before you buy, insure, or order parts.

The three main sections

Modern VINs split into three blocks:

  • Positions 1–3 — World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
  • Positions 4–9 — Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS), including the check digit at position 9
  • Positions 10–17 — Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS): year, plant, and serial

Letters I, O, and Q never appear in a valid VIN. That rule reduces confusion with 1 and 0 when people copy numbers by hand.

Positions 1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier

The WMI names the manufacturer (and often the geographic region of the maker). Position 1 is a country or region cue: 1, 4, or 5 often point to the United States; 2 to Canada; 3 to Mexico; J to Japan; W to Germany; K to South Korea, among others. Positions 2–3 refine the maker. For example, many Toyota North American builds use WMIs such as 4T1 or 5TD, while Japanese-built Toyotas commonly start with JT.

Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section

These five characters describe the vehicle’s platform attributes as defined by that manufacturer: model line, body style, restraint system, engine family, transmission hints, or drive type. Encoding is not universal. A G in position 5 on a Ford means something different than the same letter on a Honda.

Practical tip: treat positions 4–8 as manufacturer-specific codes. Decode them with a brand-aware tool or the maker’s service literature. Generic charts that claim “position 5 always means engine” are often wrong outside one brand family.

Position 9: Check digit

Position 9 validates the other 16 characters using a weighted algorithm defined in ISO 3779 / related North American practice. If someone mistypes a character or invents a VIN, the check digit often fails. A passing check digit does not prove the VIN is honest on a stolen or cloned car—it only proves the string is internally consistent.

Position 10: Model year code

Position 10 encodes the model year (not necessarily the calendar year of sale). Codes cycle through letters and digits, skipping I, O, Q, U, and Z, and also skipping 0 in the letter cycle. For example, R maps to 2024, S to 2025, and T to 2026 in the current cycle.

Model year can differ from title year in some jurisdictions if the vehicle was built late in the prior calendar year. Always compare position 10 with the door jamb label and the seller’s paperwork. Full tables live in VIN model year codes.

Position 11: Assembly plant

Position 11 is a plant code assigned by the manufacturer. It does not use a single global lookup table. Toyota’s C is not the same plant as GM’s C. Use manufacturer documentation or a brand decoder to map plant letters to factories.

Positions 12–17: Production serial

The last six characters are usually a sequential production number within the plant and model year context. They uniquely identify the unit among vehicles sharing the same earlier encoding. Do not assume the serial encodes options or trim by itself; option content is typically in positions 4–8 or in manufacturer build sheets.

For manufacturers with small production volumes, serial ranges can still be informative for authenticity checks when compared against known sequences—but that is advanced work and not a substitute for a title search.

Worked example pattern

Take a fictional pattern: 1HGCM82633A004352 (illustrative structure only). Reading left to right:

  1. WMI 1HG — Honda associated with U.S. production context
  2. VDS CM826 — model/descriptor block (brand-specific)
  3. Check digit 3
  4. Year code 3 — 2003 in that cycle
  5. Plant A — maker-defined plant
  6. Serial 004352

What reading a VIN cannot do
