DecodeAnyVin is a free online VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) decoder that helps you understand any vehicle's identity at a glance. Whether you are buying a used car, verifying insurance records, ordering the correct replacement parts, or just curious what a 17-character code on your dashboard actually means, decoding the VIN is the fastest way to confirm a vehicle's make, model year, assembly plant, and engine configuration — for free, with no signup and no limit on lookups.
Our Mission
Vehicle history services routinely charge $20–$40 for a report, but the basic manufacturer specifications encoded in every VIN — make, model, model year, body style, plant, and engine — should be freely available to anyone who owns, is buying, or is researching a vehicle. We built DecodeAnyVin to make that information instantly accessible, accurate, and easy to understand, without a paywall or a required account.
How Our Decoder Works
Every VIN submitted to DecodeAnyVin goes through the same process a manufacturer's own systems use internally:
- Format validation — we confirm the VIN is exactly 17 characters and excludes the letters I, O, and Q, which are never used to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.
- Check-digit verification — position 9 is validated against the ISO 3779 / SAE J853 weighted check-digit algorithm to catch typos and flag potentially altered or cloned VINs.
- World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) lookup — positions 1–3 are matched against our WMI registry, built from SAE/ISO manufacturer assignments and public NHTSA data, to identify the manufacturer and country of origin.
- Brand-specific decoding — once the manufacturer is known, we apply that brand's own encoding rules to the Vehicle Descriptor Section (positions 4–8) and Vehicle Identifier Section (positions 9–17) to resolve model, model year, assembly plant, engine, and body style.
Our Data Sources & Methodology
We do not guess at VIN structures. Our brand-specific decoding logic is researched and cross-referenced against multiple sources before being published, including:
- ISO 3779 and ISO 3780 (the international VIN and WMI standards) and US federal regulation 49 CFR Part 565.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) public Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC) API and WMI database.
- Manufacturer-published VIN decoding guides, owner's manuals, and factory build-sheet documentation where publicly available.
- Cross-checks against real, verified example VINs for each supported model line to confirm our decoding rules produce correct results before they go live.
We continually expand and refine our brand coverage as new model years, plants, and WMI codes are published. If you spot a decoding result that looks wrong, please let us know — corrections based on real-world examples are one of the main ways we improve accuracy.

DecodeAnyVin currently applies dedicated, brand-specific decoding rules to more than 50 manufacturers, including Toyota, Ford, Honda, BMW, General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac), Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Chrysler/Stellantis (Jeep, Dodge, Ram), Tesla, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Renault, Scania, and more. Who Runs This Site
DecodeAnyVin is an independent, ad-supported project built and maintained by people who care about vehicle data being accurate and freely accessible. We are not a title/damage reporting company, a dealership, an insurer, or affiliated with any automaker — which means we have no incentive to inflate or obscure a decode result. Advertising revenue is what allows us to keep the decoder free and unlimited for everyone.
How We Protect Your Privacy
We never sell your personal data. No account or email address is required to use the decoder. Lookup activity may be logged for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and aggregate analytics, as described in full in our Privacy Policy.
