WMI Explained: World Manufacturer Identifier (VIN Positions 1–3)

Understand VIN WMI codes in positions 1–3: region cues, manufacturer IDs, and why WMI is not the same as assembly country. Decode with DecodeAnyVin.

The World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) occupies positions 1–3 of a VIN. It is assigned through national standards bodies working with ISO practices so each manufacturer code remains unique. Reading the WMI tells you which maker (and often which regional manufacturing entity) issued the VIN—not necessarily where the last bolt was tightened.

Position 1: geographic region cue

The first character groups manufacturers by region. Common examples used on road vehicles:

  • 1, 4, 5 — United States
  • 2 — Canada
  • 3 — Mexico
  • J — Japan
  • K — South Korea (also used in other K-range assignments)
  • S — United Kingdom (among other S-range uses)
  • W — Germany
  • Z — Italy
  • L — China (common on many export VINs)
  • 9 — South America / other assignments depending on full WMI

Treat position 1 as a hint, not a shipping label. A 1 WMI means a U.S.-assigned manufacturer identifier. The plant could still build vehicles with globally sourced parts. Conversely, a Japanese brand can hold U.S. WMIs for factories in Kentucky, Indiana, or Mississippi.

Positions 2–3: manufacturer identity

Characters two and three complete the unique manufacturer code. Large automakers hold many WMIs across brands, plants, and vehicle types (passenger car vs MPV vs truck). Examples you will see often:

  • Toyota / Lexus patterns such as JT…, 4T…, 5T
  • Honda / Acura patterns such as JH…, 1HG, 19X
  • GM patterns across Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and others
  • Ford patterns under U.S., Canada, and Mexico WMIs
  • European makers under W, Z, S, V ranges

WMI vs assembly plant

Shoppers often say “Japanese VIN” when they mean “Japanese brand.” Clarify three different facts:

  1. Brand — marketing name on the trunk
  2. WMI — who was assigned the identifier block
  3. Plant code (position 11) — which factory assembled the unit

Small volume and niche manufacturers

Low-volume makers sometimes share a WMI regionally, with positions 12–14 participating in unique identification under older ISO arrangements for manufacturers building fewer than 500 vehicles per year. In practice, most mainstream passenger vehicles you decode today use a unique three-character WMI assigned to that maker.

Trailer, low-speed, and incomplete-vehicle manufacturers also hold WMIs. Do not assume every 17-character VIN belongs to a light-duty car.

If no brand ruleset matches, you still receive the ISO-level parse: WMI region/maker resolution where known, check digit, year, and plant character. That split is why two VINs with the same year code can show different descriptor richness.

Fraud and WMI mismatch

Cloned vehicles sometimes carry a VIN whose WMI does not fit the body sitting in front of you—for example, a European-looking chassis wearing a WMI associated with a different maker. More often, clones copy a consistent VIN from a similar donor. WMI alone rarely catches cloning; mismatched badges plus VIN, or VIN plates that look replaced, matter more. Practical checks using WMI

  • Confirm the decoded maker matches the badges and build quality expectations.
  • Use WMI + plant to test “imported rare” marketing claims.
  • When ordering parts, WMI helps catalogs route to the correct market catalog—still prefer full VIN entry when available (ordering parts with your VIN).
  • For recalls, submit the full VIN to NHTSA, not WMI alone (NHTSA recalls by VIN).

Multiple WMIs under one consumer brand

Large groups assign different WMIs to cars, MPVs, light trucks, and sometimes to specific plants or subsidiaries. Seeing two Toyotas with different first-three characters is normal, not evidence of a fake. What matters is whether each WMI is a known assignment for that maker and whether the rest of the VIN’s descriptors fit that vehicle type.

Trailers, motorcycles, and low-speed vehicles

WMI space also covers trailers, motorcycles, and specialty vehicles. A 17-character string on a cargo trailer is a real VIN for that trailer—not interchangeable with the tow vehicle’s VIN. Keep insurance policies and registration packets clear about which VIN belongs to which asset.

Research workflow for unfamiliar WMIs

  1. Decode on DecodeAnyVin and note the resolved manufacturer.
  2. Confirm the maker matches badges and build quality.
  3. Cross-check plant and year for plausibility.
  4. If the maker is obscure, seek manufacturer documentation or a specialist forum that cites primary sources—not random image posts.

Unfamiliar WMIs appear on emerging EV brands and on rebadged commercial chassis. Treat novelty as a cue for deeper paperwork checks, not as automatic fraud.

Read positions 1–3 as manufacturer identity under international assignment rules. Then use plant and descriptor data—and a physical inspection—before you trust a story about where and how a vehicle was built.
