What a title / history report returns
Commercial history products (and some government extracts) may include:
- Title brands: salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon, junk
- Reported accidents and airbag deployments (when insurers or shops report them)
- Odometer readings from inspections, listings, and DMV events
- Number of owners and registration jurisdictions

Coverage is incomplete by nature. Not every fender-bender is reported. Private cash repairs may never appear. A “clean” report lowers risk; it does not guarantee a clean car.

Marketing language to watch

Many sites advertise a free VIN check, show a partial factory decode or a teaser, then upsell a multi-report package. That business model can be legitimate if the teaser is accurate and the paid product’s coverage is disclosed. Problems start when the teaser implies a clean title. Read the fine print: if the free layer only validates format or shows year/make/model, you still need a history product for brands and crashes.

Government records vs commercial aggregators
Some states offer title record lookups or NMVTIS-participating access with different depth than glossy consumer reports.
