17 characters — letters and numbers only

MAN Truck & Bus uses German WMI WMA. Positions 4–6 are the three-digit type code: codes ending in X are TGX, S are TGS, codes starting with H are TGA, and codes starting with N (or later D suffixes) are TGL/TGM. European builds often put Z in positions 7–8. Position 10 is 0 when model year is not encoded; a real ISO year letter is decoded.

Our decoder maps WMA to Germany, resolves type codes to TGX/TGS/TGM/TGL/TGA and Lion's City/Coach, maps plant letters (Munich, Steyr, Kraków, Ankara, Starachowice), and marks the ISO check digit as N/A on typical EU commercial VINs. WMB is Audi, not MAN.

How to Read a MAN VIN

Start with WMI WMA. Positions 4–6 are the type code (for example 16D = TGM 15 t, 06S = TGS 18 t, 06X = TGX 18 t). Position 11 is the plant (M = Munich, Y = Steyr, P/K = Kraków/Niepołomice, T = Ankara, F = Starachowice).

Frequently Asked Questions — MAN VIN

What WMI does MAN use?

WMA is the primary WMI for MAN Truck & Bus in Germany. Neoplan coaches may use WAG. South Africa uses AAM; historical US buses used 13M. WMB is Audi, not MAN.

What does type code 16D mean?

Positions 4–6 16D identify a TGM 15 t 4x2 BL (MANTIS L 16D, C1/D08 generation).

What does type code 06S mean?

06S is a TGS 18 t 4x2 BL with D20/D26 diesel. Official MAN documents: TGS type codes end with S, TGX codes end with X.

Why is model year missing?

Many EU MAN VINs use 0 in position 10. When that digit is a real ISO year letter (for example J = 2018, T = 2026), the decoder reports it.

Where is the VIN on a MAN truck?

Stamped on the front right chassis rail, on the type plate in the co-driver B-pillar, and in the instrument-cluster diagnosis menu.

Is a TGE VIN a MAN WMA number?

Usually not. TGE is the VW Crafter twin and typically uses Volkswagen WMI WV1. A WMA VIN with a type code ending in V is a rare MAN-stamped TGE.

What plant is P or M?

M is Munich. P (and K/C) map to the Polish truck plant at Niepołomice near Kraków, where TGL/TGM and some TGS/TGX are built. Y is Steyr in Austria.

Does MAN use an ISO check digit?

Typical EU commercial MAN VINs do not use position 9 as an FMVSS/ISO check digit. Treat it as manufacturer-assigned.
